About

Elitish has a mission. If I would have said that when I started the site it would have seemed like I was trying to reassure myself of that. But we truly do have a mission now: to change music for the better. Ambitious I know, but why not be ambitious. The summer of 08′ was supposed to be the launch of the site and it technically was. The site was up and walking but it was a bit of a .com Frankenstein. It was operating with no particular goal in mind, and most importantly, it didn’t know who it was. And that is because I didn’t know what I wanted from it.

It was as if I took all of the pages from a phonebook, tossed them in the air and dialed the first number I found, expecting it to be my mother on the other end of the line. There was no direction, and like Alice in Wonderland, if I didn’t know where I wanted to go, it didn’t matter which direction I went in. I felt that just moving was better than thinking and sometimes it is. But not that time.

Elitish was started on a whim, I thought the name sounded cool. Uh-leet-ish. My friend Chris Reinhard acted as a wall to bounce ideas off of and sometimes the wall of Reinhard became a blackhole that inhaled and spit back a mangled version of those ideas. It helped though. He was the person who suggested that I take the extra “e” out of Elitish. So I did.

Let’s fast forward to December 2008. That was when I got a focused idea of what I wanted for the site. A friend helped me with this too. His name is Blueprint. He suggested that I write a mission statement and just thinking about doing that helped me. It made me think about my aspirations for Elitish and what was really important.

I started this site because I love music and I love writing. I did not start it to speak to friends and family. I did not start it to get the occasional comment, telling me that something mediocre was worth continuing. I started it to create something totally un-mediocre, something that existed on the edges. I want people to either love or hate Elitish, I don’t want any meh’s.

I want Elitish to be a vehicle for change. I want it to be a platform that fans and artists can use as a trampoline or a launchpad; to reach the level that they want to reach. And hopefully we can turn all of these want’s into “is” and “are” on a continuous basis.

The mission of Elitish will change every year but it will always contribute to our goal of bettering music. We don’t want to be some website you go to just to hear about the newest rumor, or listen to an mp3 that you can find everywhere. What is the point? How does a site like that make a difference? It doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong, we won’t be all sappy, I heart music, save music in our school systems or other bullshit like that. Expect us to be sarcastic, sometimes assholes, who have strong opinions about music. But we also wanna do some good.
